Der Blackberry-Hersteller RIM hat den neuen Blackberry Storm ganz bewusst gegen das iPhone von Apple positioniert. Wenn man die Testberichte der Kollegen so liest, dann kann der Storm allerdings nicht mit dem iPhone mithalten. Hier ein Überblick.

Matthias Kremp von Spiegel Online, der eigentlich nicht für Total-Verrisse bekannt ist, nimmt den Storm ordentlich auseinander:

Manch Nutzer mag ohne Blackberry-Tastenfeld kaum noch Texte tippen. Der Versuch, diese Technik auf einen Touchscreen zu übertragen, war das Ziel des Storm – und wurde leider verfehlt. (…)

Um beispielsweise einen Menüpunkt auszuwählen, muss man diesen zuerst sanft mit dem Finger ansteuern. Das ist eine Art Vorwarnung an das System: “Achtung, diese Taste drücke ich gleich.” Der Blackberry hilft dabei zu erkennen, ob man richtig liegt, indem er den jeweils aktiven Menüpunkt oder Buchstaben blau aufleuchten lässt. Um den Menüpunkt zu aktivieren, muss man jetzt aber noch mit dem Finger das Display herunterdrücken. Erst damit wird die Aktion ausgelöst.

Das ist ungefähr so sinnvoll, als würde man genötigt, beim Tippen an der Computertastatur jeden gedrückten Buchstaben mit einem Mausklick zu bestätigen: “Ja, ich wollte diese Taste wirklich drücken.” (…)

Ein iPhone-Killer ist der Storm nicht. Möglich, dass Hersteller RIM die gröbsten Schnitzer per Software-Update ausmerzt und dabei auch noch die Geschwindigkeit verbessert, doch vorerst bleibt der Sturm aus. Mehr als ein laues Lüftchen kann der Touchscreen-Blackberry nicht erzeugen – auch wenn sein Name anderes verspricht.

Auch David Pogue von der New York Times ist von der virtuellen Tastatur des Blackberry Storm enttäuscht:

The first sign of trouble was the concept: a touch-screen BlackBerry. That’s right — in its zeal to cash in on some of that iPhone touch-screen mania, R.I.M. has created a BlackBerry without a physical keyboard.

Hello? Isn’t the thumb keyboard the defining feature of a BlackBerry? A BlackBerry without a keyboard is like an iPod without a scroll wheel. A Prius with terrible mileage. Cracker Jack without a prize inside.

R.I.M. hoped to soften the blow by endowing its touch screen with something extra: clickiness. The entire screen acts like a mouse button. Press hard enough, and it actually responds with a little plastic click.

As a result, the Storm offers two degrees of touchiness. You can tap the screen lightly, or you can press firmly to register the palpable click.

It’s not a bad idea. In fact, it ought to make the on-screen keyboard feel more like actual keys. In principle, you could design a brilliant operating system where the two kinds of taps do two different things. Tap lightly to type a letter — click fully to get a pop-up menu of accented characters (é, è, ë and so on). Tap lightly to open something, click fully to open a shortcut menu of options. And so on.

Unfortunately, R.I.M.’s execution is inconsistent and confusing.

Weiterhin stört sich Pogue an vielen anderen Details. Die Menü-Punkte der Pull-Down-Menüs lägen so dicht beieinander, dass man sie mit dem Finger kaum treffen könne. Wisch-Bewegungen auf dem Display würden nur mit einer Zeitverzögerung erkannt. Und natürlich prnagert Pogue an, dass RIM dem Blackberry Storm kein WiFi spendiert hat.

Etwas freundlicher geht Walt Mossberg vom Wall Street Journal mit dem Blackberry Storm um. Mossberg mag die Kamera, die Videos aufnehmen kann, den auswechselbaren Akku, Push-E-Mail, die Copy-und-Paste-Funktion, die bei Apple iPhone (noch) fehlt. Außerdem lobt er die Sicherheitsfunktionen für Unternehemnsnetze und das im Verglich zu AT&T bessere 3G-Netzwerk Verizon. Aber auch Mossberg vermisst WiFi und kann mit dem “SurePress Touchscreen” auch wenig anfangen:

The feature does provide a more reassuring confirmation that a key has been struck or an icon has been clicked than the mere visual feedback one receives from the iPhone. But neither I, nor any of the several BlackBerry addicts I asked to try it out, considered typing on the Storm’s keyboard to be very similar to using the keyboard of a traditional full-sized BlackBerry.

Auch Joshua Topolsky von Engadget ist nicht wirklich vom Blackberry Storm begeistert:

The selling points are easy: the phone is gorgeous to look at and hold, it’s designed and backed by RIM (now almost a household name thanks to their prevalence in the business and entertainment markets), and it’s packed with features that, at first glance, make it seem not only as good as the iPhone, but better. The only hitch in this plan is a major one: it’s not as easy, enjoyable, or consistent to use as the iPhone, and the one place where everyone is sure they have an upper hand — that wow-inducing clickable screen — just isn’t all that great.

Daniel Dumas von Wired.com spricht dem Blackberry Storm den Anspruch ab, ein “iPhone-Killer” zu sein. Immerhin hat Dumas auch ein paar Pluspunkte entdeckt, bevor er sich dann die Schwächen vornimmt:

WIRED:

• Click screen is a revelation for touch-compatible devices.
• Converts iTunes to BlackBerry media without breaking a sweat.
• Included GSM card means the Storm is a true globetrotter — it can work in virtually any foreign port.
• Photos, video and text pop like Ice Cube’s AK (on a bad day).
• Posh fit and finish look rich enough to buy you dinner.

TIRED:

• OS lag on a piece of hardware this gorgeous is unacceptable.
• Scrolling through menus is jagged, slow and pokey.
• Accelerometer sometimes takes a good 5 to 10 seconds to orient itself.
• Lack of WiFi is lame.
• Verizon’s totalitarian control over the Storm’s OS is even lamer.

Auch der Review von Yardena Arar (PC World) wird die PR-Abteilungen von RIM, Verizon und hierzulande Vodafone nicht glücklich machen:

The decision by Research in Motion to differentiate the Storm by giving its capacitive touch screen a mechanical component (the entire screen functions as a button for confirming selections or initiating actions) turns out to be more confusing than helpful. Ultimately, the Storm’s touch interface feels like a failed experiment. — It’s too bad, because the Storm has some nice features and makes a great first impression.
